Do you have an interest?
We’re talking any interest. Anything that you can talk about for hours. Anything that you can nerd out to all night. Anything that makes your heart skip a beat.
Bass fishing? International relations? Being a Democrat? Phish? Cooking fish? Learning the origins of different variations of the word “fish”?
Ok, you’re interested in something.
Phew, that’s a relief.
So, you’re an avid _________ (fill in the blank here with said interest).
Now, I have a proposition for you. How does the idea of talking about it all day, meeting other people like you, and making tons of money nerding out to it all night and day sound to you?
Do I sound like a scammy salesman?
Or does that just sound… well… downright amazing?
20 years ago I would have been a scammy salesman. Now, thanks to the internet, it’s totally possible.
Let me show you how.
First, let’s pretend your life can be anything you want it to be.
What would your dream be if you knew you could not fail?
Maybe you want to a book deal like artist/author Austin Kleon.
Maybe you want to use your degree to become an associate editor for a major website on the topic, like Margarita Tartakovsky.
Maybe you want to live in Mexico all winter and Europe all summer like lifestyle entrepreneur Corbett Barr.
Maybe you want to make $7,000 a month to travel around the world and photograph gorgeous events, like Tim King?
You couldn’t go do what you love, you’re a responsible human being just trying to make ends meet, not a trust fund baby or the child of some wealthy business tycoon. You need job security, right?
Well, let’s first and foremost debunk that myth. There’s no such thing as job security. As far as I’m concerned, working for someone else means I’m completely dependent on their business plans, their success, and their continued desire to have me on staff, or guess what? I don’t have a job anymore. That, to me, is the furthest thing from job security. Do me a favor, go read the famous article 10 Reasons You Should Never Get a Job by Steve Pavlina, and then come back. I’ll wait. Really.
Ok, so you read it, right?
Then let’s move forward with this.
Whatever goals you have today, blogging can help get you there (need more proof? Just read more Blogging Fearlessly interviews and tell me you aren’t filled with at least a hint of “I could do this” or a tinge of extreme jealousy).
It’s possible. Thanks to the internet, you can create a lucrative business based on the niche that you love – just by doing what you do best: loving it.
By creating an online identity in your niche and driving relevant traffic to your site, there are a thousand possible business models that you can use to leverage that traffic into a lucrative, sustainable business.
Thousands of people have done it. Why can’t you?
I quit my job, where I worked 40+ hours a week to fulfill someone else’s dreams, to work from home, in my pajamas, to work my ass off doing things I love.
Oh, I forgot to mention, this isn’t a quick fix – you will have to work your ass off.
But it’s time to get off that ass, you unique shiny snowflake, and go do something with your life.
For lack of a better word, we’re going to call it blogging.
What we’re really talking about is building an online identity that you can leverage in a thousand different ways to create an authentic life lived entirely on your own terms.
Ok, good deal. You’re going to start a blog. You’re in.
Now where’s the money hiding?
Well that’s the first kicker. There are a lot of people out there trying to make this work.
In fact, there are an estimated 450 million blogs just in the English speaking world alone.
If you think 20 minutes a night plus a “build and they will come” mentality is going to get you anywhere, you’re kidding yourself.
But does that mean it’s impossible? Not a single bit.
For the right person, making $100,000+ a year off a blog, living life on your own terms, is incredibly plausible.
But you have to be the right person.
- Are a good (enough) writer
- Have at least one niche interest that you know you could talk about for days (Video games? Organizational techniques? Cooking and recipes? Women’s health?)
- Are self-motivated
- Are tired of living someone else’s life
… Then I’m calling you out.
You need to build a blog.
Start small if you need to, but it’s time to start.
And now it’s time to sit down and figure out, like that responsible adult that you are,
just exactly what will it take for you to have a blog that can help you
Like any other business, you aren’t going anywhere without two things:
1. A solid education
It’s about who you know.
It’s about what you know.
And it’s about leveraging those connections to build a popular blog.
Because when you have followers, you, my friend, have a marketplace.
When I originally signed up for Jon Morrow’s guest blogging course, I had $2,000 to my name, no job, and everything resting on my success in blogging.
Today, my blog MsMorphosis has over 15,000 visitors a month (and growing)
I am able to charge $100 an hour for blog consulting (a price which will go up soon).
And now I’m one of Jon’s only 2 course assistants and one of his affiliates.
This course singlehandedly changed my life, career, and future.
Consulting with Jon is $500 an hour… but you won’t be able to do it, because he’s booked.
Consulting with me is $100 an hour… which is helpful if you just need some strategy sessions, or some help getting started. If you’re looking into a monetization strategy or want some copywriting coaching, I’m your girl (click here for consulting fees and packages).
But maybe you want more than that.
If you’re looking to take this to a whole new level like I did, then you need blog college. It’s worth every penny (and when I took it, I must confess there weren’t many pennies to my name). It was a huge sacrifice, but it saved my life and career. I wouldn’t be anywhere without it.
Truly, thanks to Jon, I got my degree in blogging.
So, you can get some consulting. You can learn on your own. You can get some coaching with me. But the best deal, as much as I would love for you to be one of my coaching clients, is Jon’s GuestBlogging Apprenticeship Class. With his course you get both of us free. For less than an hour and a half consulting time with Jon, you can have access to both of us indefinitely.
